Flies and Shifts in Between Time
As sunshine cascades on the ground, shadows are formed and swaying on the road. The light is warm, and the gentle wind carries a fragrant smell. Who is the creator of this vista? The scattered branches and leaves are like notes written with memories, falling by my feet as I walk. As the branch ends encounter the wind–this is the calling of the ancestor spirit–a deep blessing evokes a warm memory. I delineate the outline of this very moment, its original appearance and the most basic texture of that particular time, to seek the earliest feeling of being moved. Everything is just so natural and beautiful. I thank the gift of the ancestor spirit. —Aluaiy Kaumakan
Aluaiy utilises “rubbing” to unfold an essential process of encounter between her hands and the material. In this process of ink rolling and “printing,” she must focus on the relationship between the material and the fabric. This relationship is like her life, in which she always pays attention to her identity, culture, survival and values–a pluralistic, multi-tasking existence that is constantly full of challenges. “Rubbing,” in a way, defines Aluaiy’s life: “I have returned to my ancestral town, the Paridrayan Community–my home, my cultural heritage, my childhood memories. After the disaster brought on by Typhoon Morakot, we have not been allowed to return to our community that embodies our memory and culture. It is impossible for us to dismantle and relocate the community. So, what should we do?” By “rubbing,” she allows the traces to be produced through her hands,to carry the cultural memory and the life of land into her work.
